“Chinese scholars… absolutely dominate research in the following fields: materials science, chemistry, engineering, computer science, the environment and ecology, agricultural science, physics and math.”
(David Brooks)
China cheers cheeky America’s fossil fuelish folly. Here’s why:
China leads global production in
— steel
— aluminum
— shipbuilding
— batteries
— solar power
— electric vehicles
— wind turbines
— drones
— 5G equipment
— consumer electronics
— active pharmaceutical ingredients
— bullet trains.
The very wellfare of warfare is on the line, for chrissake. Place your bets: China or US ASAP?
Never fear. An old saying I made up is:
Governments can’t find money for much of anything until it’s time to find it for making war. Then Katy bar the door, the funds are magicked up like wildfire roaring down a bone dry, scrub-choked California canyon.
I no it’s wordy for an old saying, but practice it a bit and you’ll be parroting it in know time. <wink>

It’s about to get a lot worse now that the US, up to now a magnet for the world’s most brilliant future researchers, is now pushing them away, and Japan and Europe are eagerly recruiting international scholars from within the US as well as from their home countries. I’m sure China is recruiting them at the career level, though China’s universities still lack international pulling power. Anyway, the brain drain away from the US is well underway.

Very good points, Gary. The national self harm bids fair to snowball in this and so many other ways, likely with generational effect. But at least the Kennedy Center has been wrenched from the clutches of the culture vultures and placed under the management of a true entertainer! Thanks for your comment.

I love your saying! Especially because it’s true. I fondly remember the years before COVID, when our government had too little money even for areas like education. Then COVID came, and the billions flowed…

Thank you very much! Yes, I may know some things in more detail, but some things surprise me as much as they surprise everyone else 🙂 I’ll be back for a more detailed look at the place soon…
