Houston Past and Present “Plate 1 [Of 6]. This stately home, architecturally true to colonial tradition, was built prior to the Civil War by Judge Edwin A. Palmer of Virginia. It then stood remote from the street in the center of a square of ground bounded by Rusk, Walker, La Branch, and Austin Streets. Generous trees lent their shade to its spacious grounds, hedge-bordered paths led to its hospitable door. Today it is the remaining relic of a neighborhood once noted for beautiful homes, and though assigned to a meager portion of its original space, bereft of its charming setting and effective perspective, its stateliness and dignity still command attention.”
