Didactic Doggerel

Space-Ball

Note: Merkanooka is in Australia. Seguin, a town in Texas, is pronounced “suh-GHEEN.” Turley is in Oklahoma.

A space-ball fell from nowhere on Namibia,
A place more noted for a fossil tibia.

Another one, the Merkanooka ball
From Gemini, no mystery at all,

Held water for the astronauts to drink.
This latest one I don’t know what to think.

A Turley lady got a noggin-knock
From sky junk happily not hard as rock.

The Phobos-Grunt Mars probe that has been stuck,
A fourteen-ton colossus out of luck,

Will make a very hard landing not far
From where I hope that only oceans are.

A Delta rocket needed a latrine,
And dropped its waste from Saudi to Seguin.

A nuked-up Russian bird ran all amuck
And slammed the Arctic like a hockey puck.

This litter from the heavens makes me mutter:
How on earth to dodge the rain of clutter?

The slogan of Texas, “Don’t mess with me,”
Excludes the mess from space, apparently.

The only remedy I know of, fellas,
Is carrying some mighty stout umbrellas!

“Physical person”

Law school was where I first met the term “physical person.” It puzzled me initially: What person would not be “physical”? That started my education about the bizarre legal fiction that asserts corporations to be people with rights and privileges similar to yours and mine. Its latest twist is the 2010 “Citizens United” decision. That’s context for this somewhat coldblooded, but astute, quip by Timothy Egan:

“A corporation will never be a citizen until you can execute one in Texas.”
