“… Admirable testimonies of the affection, intelligence and empathy with which Goya depicted women.”
(Fernández-Galiano, the show’s curator)
At a preview of the exhibition this week, Cristina Rubio, the museum’s deputy director, drew attention to “the long, quick, loose brushstrokes on La Tirana’s shawl” and “the intricate detail at the hem of her dress.” Goya, she said, was not only “fascinated with human psychology, but was a master of texture and fabric, too.”
… [In] “María del Rosario Fernández, ‘La Tirana,’” an actress who frequented fashionable salons oozes self-confidence.

Interesting to see the detail in isolation – wonderful!

I confess that Goya has never been a favorite painter of mine. Something about his formal portraits seems stilted and archaic (slightly). But he had wide range. When he dipped into the crazy and violent aspect of things he was strong. I too was ravished by the detail of this painting.

I agree with your comments about Goya’s work – a bit too emotional and out there for me but when you look at the detail ….. fabulous!
