“The English,” says Rita Konig…“have never been afraid to seem a little mad…” A longstanding delight in globe-spanning, era-leaping, florid kookiness sets the British apart… The island-bound English… have long prized ecumenical, brightly colored cheekiness… The result can be read today as a parody of highbrow semantics… Such barmy eclecticism resonates with the current generation of English designers… For [Rifat] Ozbek, such a mix telegraphs contemporary internationalism… Deeply saturated colors are a first gesture of liberation, says… Luke Edward Hall… “When it’s grim in the world, you want to challenge that quite strongly.”… “[Sibyl Colefax] knew that what matters most is not the color but the tone,” [John Fowler] says. “If it is vibrating at the right frequency, there is no limit to what you can use.”… The British have never bothered to neatly segregate representational patterns from the abstract…“In this country, we have rarely done what Americans do,” [Rita] Konig says. “We don’t call up a decorator and chuck out everything we have, see something on Pinterest and overnight become something new. “Flowers” and Candy Bars

I’ve started viewing “Flowers” on Netflix, a British series starring Olivia Colman. In episode 2, I think I heard a character ask a refreshment vendor for “two Clunks and a Milky Finger.” The vendor hands him three candy bars. Dialog goes at a fast clip in this endearingly daffy comedy, so I can’t be sure, but I’m hoping that’s what I heard. I’ve collected American candy bar names for years — O’Henry, Snickers, Butter Finger, Bit-‘O-Honey, Payday, Almond Joy, Mounds, Three Musketeers, Baby Ruth, Zero, Mister Goodbar — those are ones from the top of my head; however, their names are stale enough to have lost their laughability. If Clunks and Milky Fingers are indeed two wrapped British treats, freshness arrives.

Ruskin’s Strong Instinct to Draw

In the bicentenary of his birth, it’s time we looked again at the forward-thinking and influential ideas of the great Victorian, writes Daisy Dunn.

Indeed, Ruskin was not only an astute critic but a talented artist in his own right. He likened the “strong instinct” he felt to draw to the instinct to eat and drink. Drawings of gooseberry blossom and ragwort, mountains and clouds, minerals and birds, including an exquisite sulphur-crested cockatoo he sketched at the zoo, line the walls of the London exhibition. Art, he believed, should reflect nature.

I Just Spent 3 Months in the Wrong Time Zone!

The other factor that affects Spaniards’ sleeping habits is that the country is in the wrong time zone. Geographically, Spain should be on Greenwich Mean Time, but in 1942 the fascist dictator Francisco Franco switched the nation to European Central Time in solidarity with Adolf Hitler. Perhaps bizarrely, until recently there haven’t been any moves to change it back.

I’m too lazy to investigate every single unfamiliar word I encounter, but after sliding over a subheading several times that said an actor “hung out with a cosh,” I finally had to look up “cosh” (then read the article): Merriam-Webster says, ‘(Chiefly British): a weighted weapon similar to a blackjack.’ Cosh closed.

Sleaford Mods have described their work as “electronic munt minimalist punk-hop rants for the working class.”[1] Williamson is responsible for the words, Fearn for the music. Sleaford Mods songs have been described as embittered rants about such topics as unemployment, modern working life, celebrities and pop culture, capitalism and society in general.[19] The lyrics usually contain profanity, which is, according to Williamson, the way in which he speaks and “not just fucking swearing”.[19] Fearn’s music has been described as “purgatorial loop[s]” of “pugilistic post-punk-style bass; functional but unprepossessing beats; occasional cheap keyboard riffs and listless wafts of guitar.”[20] (“Sleaford Mods,” Wikipedia)

Widely Accepted Attribution Standard
